Illiteracy: What you should know

Illiteracy: The basics

Hey everyone! After speaking to several administrators about First Book this past week, I began to truly consider the cause and effect relationship of illiteracy. It inspired me to note to all of you what exactly I personally think  is causing this growing problem, the results, and how we can end this illiteracy epidemic. I know I am in someways getting on a "soap box" if you will, but the problem of illiteracy is one that is truly close to my heart! I just never want to see a child not reach his or her goals because of this problem that should have never become present. Let's not only fight illiteracy...let's end it!

The Problems:
1.)   The problem of illiteracy is generational. We are passing this problem down from one generation to the next.
2.)  Schools can’t do it alone. Parental involvement is key.
3.)   Lack of early testing for learning disabilities
4.)  RESOURCES* We must give our children the tools necessary to be successful!

       Negative Impacts:
1.)    We are bringing up generation that can’t/doesn’t place importance on reading.
2.)    Self-esteem and self-confidence issues; Children become embarrassed of their inability. This could possibly even subject them to bullying.
3.)    Adult illiteracy; joblessness – supporter of economic status
4.)  Losing faith and confidence in their future.
5.)    Not reaching their full potential*

      Resolutions:
1.)    Be an example! Have D.E.A.R. Time everyday! (Drop Everything And Read)
2.)    Parents: Get involved! The teachers need your help.
3.)    It is a community effort. We need more avenues for our children to become successful. I encourage individuals, business owners, and corporations to support already established and the formation of after-school programs, learning centers, etc.
4.)    RESOURCES – First Book, Non-profit organization*
